Herb and Veggies Garden

I live in a city where I have to drive nearly a half an hour to get quality produce. Yesterday I wanted mojitos very badly and I went to 4 grocery stores before I found some mint.
Consequently, I am very interested in starting an herb garden for sure, but perhaps a veggie garden as well. I live in Michigan, so I am thinking that if I could do an herb garden that could survive indoors during the winter that would be fabulous. Any ideas?
