I live in a city where I have to drive nearly a half an hour to get quality produce. Yesterday I wanted mojitos very badly and I went to 4 grocery stores before I found some mint.
Consequently, I am very interested in starting an herb garden for sure, but perhaps a veggie garden as well. I live in Michigan, so I am thinking that if I could do an herb garden that could survive indoors during the winter that would be fabulous. Any ideas?

start by seed indoor in big enough pots for it to grow (or you can transfer them in later but I find that tricky).. put in a window that gets 8 hours of direct sun. I'm sure your herbs would grow. I did my first herb garden outdoors this year and my basil/parsley/thyme is about 1 inch big... by the time they are BIG the season will be over LOL!! I have Chives and they are a perennial... But my dill that I started from seed came up beautifully and HUGE. Hope my rambling helped.
1Thanks Kiwi!
2hvnly34 you may want to try your nearest garden center as well. I know the nurseries here have small pots of herbs that you can buy and grow at home on your window sill.Good luck! Sounds like fun!
3Thanks GG!
4Sorry, I havent any suggestions, but it sounds like a great idea!
5Mint is pretty easy to grow, I have a big pot on my deck in sun shady spot but I have never tried to bring it in during the winter. I usually accept that the plant will die and I will buy a new one next year. Perhaps, I will have to try as well! If you are really set on growing herbs perhaps give the AeroGarden! Good luck!
6The soil around my house is pretty bad, but mint is the one thing that grows easily. I bought a mint plant from my grocery store a couple of years ago, planted it in the ground, and it just keeps coming back. There's more every year and now i don't know what to do with it. But, yeah, it's easy to grow in the ground too.
7Like Hvnly said everyone just needs to learn how to make a delicious mojito with all of the delicious mint that they grow! It is one of my favorite drinks for the summer!
8i just wanted to add a comment to kiwi's comment... it you put a layer of cling wrap on the top on the pot ( i rubber band mine) and make sure the soil is moist when you first plant the seeds it will act like a mini greenhouse just remove the cling wrap when the seeds grow their first set of leaves or get to tall for the cling wrap. that is how i start mine inside...
9If you want to have larger pots for your herbs to bring in during the winter, get one of those pot things with wheels on it so it's easier to move!
Some herbs will overwinter well, but cilantro & basil are annuals & will only last one season.
Mmm! Mojitos!
